City of Ontario Joins Residents on Nextdoor, the Private Social Network for Neighborhoods

March 21, 2016

The City of Ontario announced a partnership with Nextdoor (www.nextdoor.com), the free, private social network for neighborhoods that builds stronger, safer communities with the help of residents. The integration with Nextdoor will enable the City of Ontario to improve neighborhood safety and communications with Ontario neighborhoods.  Residents and City of Ontario officials will be able to work together to increase safety and strengthen its virtual neighborhood watch.

Nextdoor has proven to be an essential tool that has been well-adopted, both locally in the City of Ontario as well as nationally.  Currently more than 40% of neighborhoods in the country use Nextdoor.  By using Nextdoor, Ontario residents can create private neighborhood websites to share information, public safety issues, community events and activities, local services, and even lost pets.

City of Ontario officials will be able to share helpful information with Nextdoor members, such as important crime alerts, emergency notifications, safety precaution tips, details for special events, and updates on activity affecting local neighborhoods.  However, the City of Ontario will not be able to access residents’ websites, contact information, or content.

Nextdoor is free for residents and the City of Ontario.  Each Ontario neighborhood has its own private Nextdoor neighborhood website, accessible only to residents of that neighborhood.  Neighborhoods establish and self-manage their own Nextdoor website.  All members must verify that they live within the neighborhood before joining Nextdoor. Information shared on Nextdoor is password protected and cannot be accessed by any search engine.

Those interested in joining Nextdoor can visit www.nextdoor.com and enter their address.  If residents have questions about their Nextdoor website, please visit help.nextdoor.com.  For more information regarding the City of Ontario and current social media channels visit www.ci.ontario.ca.us/socialmedia or call (909) 395-2005.
