Traffic Division

The City of Ontario partnered with the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) to construct a traffic management center (TMC) within the City’s Emergency Operations Center.  This project accelerates the implementation of traffic signal coordination, ramp metering, and technology enhancement projects, with the objective of improving air quality for the City.

The Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee funding received for this project was utilized for the expansion of the TMC equipment to capture more intersections on the City’s traffic signal system, called Centracs.  In addition, 100 plus signals will be added to the system as Ontario Ranch develops over the next 20 years. 

These are the key functions of the TMC: 

• Implement a dynamic selection of traffic signal timings;
• Implement transit signal priority;
• Provide coordination among various agencies;
• Monitor traffic signal equipment, and dispatch resources to fix malfunctioning equipment;
• Provide traffic detection and surveillance;
• Modify arterial traffic signal timing when an incident occurs on a freeway;
• Manage incidents and special events or emergency evacuations; and
• Store data for long term archives and offline analysis. 

The City also desired to immediately migrate 19 intersections along key truck routes into Centracs and install CCTV cameras at key intersections.  These truck routes include Milliken Avenue from I-10 to Francis Street; Haven Avenue from I-10 to Philadelphia Street; and Jurupa Street from Archibald Avenue to I-15.
