The City of Ontario is partnering with its residents to combat illegal fireworks in the community, and will host a fireworks takeback event on Saturday, June 19.
From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day, residents can drop off fireworks at Fire Station 3, 1408 E. Francis St. Drop offs can be done anonymously.
The abatement event comes two weeks before the Fourth of July and three months after a fireworks explosion killed two people and caused millions of dollars of damage to an Ontario neighborhood.
“Our message is clear: All fireworks are illegal in the City of Ontario. But we need the community’s help,” said Mayor Paul Leon. “We’re encouraging any resident in the possession of fireworks to voluntarily surrender them at the takeback event, and to help in safeguarding our residents and neighborhoods. The City Council and myself are committed to preventing a repeat of the March 16 tragedy that caused indescribable damage to our city.”
The takeback event is for fireworks only. Firearms, ammunition and household waste will not be accepted.
